The Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) is seeking an experienced leader to fill the key role of Culture & Community Relations Advisor.

What We Do
There has never been a more exciting time to be at WAHA. We are an integrated health system providing the full continuum of care to the six communities of the western James Bay coast with over 500 employees, physicians, and partners in care. As a health authority, you will work in a unique setting where you have the opportunity to care for patients in all phases of their life journey, in all areas of their health experience. From Primary, Acute, and Mental Health, Dental, Specialty Clinics, Population Health and the WAHA Paramedic Service, the opportunities for growth are boundless. We provide community-based programming in all six of our communities, have six paramedic bases, three hospitals, four emergency departments, one community health centre and a total of 72 beds. Our guiding goal is to be a centre of excellence in Indigenous and remote healthcare. To make this goal a reality, we have formed partnerships with other centres of excellence to remove barriers and eliminate the inequity of health services access that have long impacted the patients that we serve.

Who You Are
- Significant experience working with First Nations communities, Indigenous organizations, health services, or community-based programs
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Omushkego region, communities, cultures, governance structures, and health system context
- Demonstrated ability to establish and sustain respectful relationships with First Nations leadership, community members, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and health professionals
- Experience in community engagement, partnership development, consultation, advocacy, or stakeholder relations
- Strong understanding of the impacts of colonialism and systemic inequities on Indigenous health and health care
What You’ll Do
- Develop and maintain authentic, respectful, and sustained relationships with Omushkego First Nations, community leadership, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, health directors, community health teams, and other community representatives.
- Develop and implement culturally appropriate approaches to community engagement and consultation.
- Help communities navigate Health Authority structures, programs, services, policies, and decision-making processes.
- Provide leadership and advice regarding culturally safe and respectful engagement with Omushkego communities.
- Establish effective mechanisms for receiving, interpreting, and communicating community perspectives and emerging issues.
- Develop and maintain partnerships with First Nations governments, Indigenous organizations, regional health partners, educational institutions, and other relevant organizations.
- Contribute an Indigenous lens to organizational quality improvement, patient experience, health equity, and service planning initiatives.
- Promote respect for First Nations data sovereignty and community ownership of Indigenous health information.
- Build strong working relationships with executives, clinical leaders, managers, physicians, allied health professionals, and corporate departments
- Travel within the service region will be required
What You Bring
- Post-secondary education in Indigenous studies, health, social services, community development, public administration, communications, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and significant relevant experience
- Knowledge of Omushkego Cree language and culture
- Experience working directly within a First Nations health system
- Experience in northern, rural, remote, or fly-in health care environments
- Experience working with First Nations governance and community decision-making structures
- Experience with Indigenous health planning, health equity, reconciliation, or community-based program development
- Must be fluent in the local native Cree Language

Salary: $110,214.00 - $125,580.00

$56.52 - $64.40 per hour
